Grasslands National Park
Planning ahead and being prepared are key to having a safe and enjoyable trip! Here are some things you should know before planning a trip to Grasslands National Park.
Be prepared
- Roads may become impassable when wet within the Park. This includes roads to the campgrounds.
- Make sure to plan ahead and fuel up your vehicle when possible.
Road Conditions
- Park access is by Gravel Roads only

- Many highways leading to the park are in poor condition
Finding your way
- Cell service is intermittent throughout the park and region
- Please be aware that GPS directions are not always correct. Be sure to research your route ahead of time, including road directions to the Block of the park that you are travelling to
Park Services
- Park services include a rustic camping offer, visitor reception, self-guided hiking/driving experiences from May to October
- Drinking water is available May long weekend to September long weekend at the Val Marie Visitor Centre, Frenchman Valley Campground, and Rock Creek Campground. Camping trailers can only fill up at the Rock Creek Campground. Trailers cannot fill up in the West Block
- There are 4 Electric vehicle charging stations located at the Visitor Centre in Val Marie, near the West Block of the Park. Tesla and Universal

Community Services
- Local communities are friendly but small and some amenities are limited. It is important to research available options prior to arrival - accommodations, showers, food, fuel, vehicle maintenance, ATMs. Check the community facilities and services page prior to departure
- Make sure to plan ahead and fuel up your vehicle when possible. Fuel stations are often not open 24 hours per day and are often accessed by Credit Card or Cardlock only
- Regional emergency ambulance, hospital, and RCMP services are limited
Climate
- Temperatures often reach 40 degrees Celsius during June, July, and August at Grasslands National Park
- There is little to no shade available throughout the park and at the campgrounds. Be prepared
- Hydrate before starting your hike and bring at least 4L of water per person per day. Drinking water is available at the campgrounds and visitor centre in Val Marie from May 17, 2024 to September 30, 2024
- All surface water in the park is unfit for human consumption. Treating, filtering, or boiling the water will not help with the water salinity
